Necklace of Diamonds From a Necklace of Stone
On January 26, 1853, at the marriage of the Emperor Napoleon III and Eugenie de Montijo, Comtesse de Teba, the Municipal Council of Paris’ vote a sum of 600 000 gold francs for the acquisition of diamond necklace ‘to the future Empress Eugenie. But two days later, the Empress refuses the collar, hoping that with this money is created “an establishment of free education for poor girls.” The money will be used to construct a building on the premises of the former market fodder, rue du Faubourg Saintt Antoine in the 12th arrondissement.
